Book Review: Fly Away Home by Jennifer Weiner
Jul 30th, 2010 by Lou

This is my first time that I have read  anything by Jennifer Weiner and I have to admit that I am hooked.   Jennifer Weiner has an excellent way to make you feel like you are a part of the book.  Even though this book was about a serious topic of adultery ruining a marriage, she was able to throw in some comic relief throughout the book.

Fly Away Home was about a politician’s wife who had to accept the fact that her husband had an affair with a younger woman.   As anyone that as been in this situation, you know this isn’t an easy task.  Trust is broken immediately upon finding out.   Sylvie, the wife, took months away from her husband to realize that she was still in love with him and even more months to realize that forgiveness was not going to be easy.    The book describes every detail of how the 6-month affair affected not only the senato’r’s life, but the life of his wife, his 2 daughters and his grandson.

Chapters in Fly Away Home are divided into chapters about the life of either Sylvie, or the 2 daughters, Diana and Lizzie.

This book is a must read.   You will fall in love with author just like I have.

My New Best Friend
Jul 28th, 2010 by Lou

Sorry guys!  I have found a new love in my life.

614081-memory foam

Yes, that is a Memory Foam mattress.   Yes, it is just that awesome.   I finally broke down and bought the 4 inch memory foam topper.  I figured what the heck, live a little.   For a year now, I have woke up to bad back aches.  I thought I was just getting old, which is probably mostly true.   After sleeping at several high dollar hotels, (Peabody and the Churchhill in DC) I would wake up energetic and not hurting.   So I told my husband I want to do this.   He finally gave in and bought one.   It is great.  My back no longer hurts in the morning.   The mattress basically makes a mold of your body as you sleep.  You really don’t even know someone is sleeping beside you unless they are touching you.   Normal mattress you know when someone turns over, but not with the memory foam mattress pad.    You go to sleep at night and don’t wake up until morning.

I would recommend buying this.   We bought a full size memory foam pad for our bed at Wal-Mart for about $100.  It was well worth the money.

Why Do You Kill Your Own Child?
Jul 26th, 2010 by Lou

How can you kill your own child?   I just don’t understand having a child grow in you for nine months and go through the pain of giving birth only to kill the child a few months or a few years later.  It just doesn’t make sense.

On July 22, the mother above killed her two children.  Why?  Here is her quote.  "They’re both not normal, not normal. They’re autistic. Both are autistic. I don’t want my children to be like that … I want normal kids."

I personally know that autistic children can be a handful.  I have lived with my older sister  for 18 years.   She is autistic and can be trying and very difficult.  She may scream or throw a tantrum for no reason.   For my sister, and most people with autism, they have a hard time communicating.   When trying to communicate with people, they may become frustrated and starting hitting, biting, etc.    They do not know any other way to get their point across.   When you have a lot of these days back to back, you can grow tired.   Can you really get so tired that you would try to make them drink bathroom cleaner?   If that doesn’t work, are you still so tired and frustrated that you would strangle them with wire?

What makes a person go to this degree to get rid of their stress?   I thought the same thing several years ago, when the mother drowned all of her children in the bathtub.

I look at Kaylee and Ashton, and think they are my world.  My world revolves around them.  Yes, I do get frustrated with them, but I still love them no matter what.

My only advice for frustrated parents, take some time for yourself.   Don’t let it get to this point where you want your child gone.   Take one night a week or month to yourself.  Let someone else watch your kids, so you can reenergize and be well prepared to handle your children.  If it is still to much, look at giving the child to someone else.   There are a lot of families that would be willing to foster or adopt your child even if they have special needs.

Book Review: Sh*t My Dad Says
Jul 24th, 2010 by Lou

This book started from a twitter account that Justin Halpern set up in August 2009.  Justin set up the twitter account as an archive for the off the wall advice that his Dad would tell him.   It all started when his friend posted a link to his twitter account.  Comedian Rob Cordry then began retweeting his tweets.  Before long, his twitter account was mentioned to the Daily Show.   By June of 2010, Justin Halpern had 1,416,000 followers.

By September 2009, Justin was sifting through book deals.  In October 2009, he signed the deal with Harper Collins to write a book based on the twitter feed.  His long time friend, Patrick Shumacker, helped him make the book possible.  On May 4, 2010, the book was released.  During the first week, the book reached #8 on the New York Time Best Seller List.

This book is hilarious.   It took me three days to read this book, I literally had to force myself to put it down.   I was laughing so hard all the way through it.    There were times, my kids and husband would ask why I was laughing.   Sh*t My Dad Says is basically what we hear a lot of our father’s telling us about life.  The book does have heavy cursing in it.  If you can get past that part, then it is a must read.  You will be laughing so hard that it will make you cry.    While reading this book, you may even reminisce about conversations that you had with your father.

Here is one excerpt from the book on tailgating the driver in front of him. “You sure do like to tailgate people…Right, because it’s real important you show up to the nothing you have to do on time.”

In November 2009, CBS announced that they wanted to make a series from the book and the twitter account.   It will air in the 2010-2011 season.

Go out and buy this book now.
